[4 ] You hold my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
[5 ] I consider the days of old,
the years long ago.
[6 ] I said, “Let me remember my song in the night;
let me meditate in my heart.”
Then my spirit made a diligent search:
(Psalm 77:4-6 ESV)
[7 ] “Will the Lord spurn forever,
and never again be favorable?
[8 ] Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
Are his promises at an end for all time?
[9 ] Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah
(Psalm 77:7-9 ESV)
Ever have these questions running through your head? Oh, I know, as “good church going christians” we are never “supposed” to admit that they do… so of course we shake our head and wonder if everyone else is lying just like we are.
Well, I love the honesty of the Psalms. I love that every question, concern, or worry I have can be answered in the Word. I love that this passage is here and I don’t have to wonder if “I am the only one who feels this way”.
But more than that I love what I see transpire in this chapter. Look at the very next verse; [10 ] Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
to the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
(Psalm 77:10 ESV) First off, notice that he “said”, not thought. Brings back the truth of speaking into our situation. But “the years of the right hand of the Most High” are referring to the past victories that he had seen or heard of. He chooses in verse 11 to “remember the deeds and the wonders (miracles) of the Lord”. Verse 12 he chooses to “ponder on the Lord’s work and His deeds.” and then you see the change in our Psalmist.
[13 ] Your way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?
[14 ] You are the God who works wonders;
you have made known your might among the peoples.
[15 ] You with your arm redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah
[16 ] When the waters saw you, O God,
when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
indeed, the deep trembled.
[17 ] The clouds poured out water;
the skies gave forth thunder;
your arrows flashed on every side.
[18 ] The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
your lightnings lighted up the world;
the earth trembled and shook.
[19 ] Your way was through the sea,
your path through the great waters;
yet your footprints were unseen.
[20 ] You led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
(Psalm 77:13-20 ESV)
We don’t know what this man was going through in his life. We don’t know what “Promises” he as waiting on, but we know it is inspired by God and is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” for us, the believer. (2Tim 3:16)
I know that I needed the reminder this morning to change my focus to God’s miraculous deeds in my life and to know that “all the promises of God are “yes in Christ.” (2 Cor 1:20).
